Officer assaulted after attending motor vehicle collision in Wamberal

A woman has been charged with assaulting police and traffic offences following an incident at Wamberal this morning.

About 7am (Saturday 20 June 2020), officers from Brisbane Water Police District were attending a break and enter in Ocean View Drive when a collision occurred nearby.

The officers went to the scene to check on the welfare of the driver after her Holden Astra hit the rear of a parked car.

The 22-year-old female driver was breath tested and returned a negative result.

The woman was arrested and informed she would be taken to Gosford Hospital for mandatory drug testing.

Police allege the woman violently struggled with both officers as they were attempting to handcuff her.

Further police attended and the woman was restrained before being placed into the police vehicle and taken to hospital.

A leading senior constable was treated at Gosford Hospital for a knee and elbow injury and has since been discharged.

The woman was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged with assault police, resist police, and negligent driving.

She was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Monday 22 June 2020).

As police await results of the mandatory drug testing, investigations continue.
