Ever had an idea but no way to make it happen? Look no further, Tamworth Regional Council is now inviting the leaders of tomorrow to put their name forward for the Youth Council.
Tamworth Regional Council Team Leader of Youth Services, Katey Allwell said: “The Tamworth Regional Youth Council is a fantastic way for young people to stay connected and help make a difference in our community.
“We all know a young person who would be a great candidate, but may not think to nominate themselves. We would like to see any parents, friends or teachers chat with that young person and help encourage them to put their name forward.”
The current circumstances related to COVID-19 means that meetings will now be online for the foreseeable future. Mrs Allwell said: “In these times issues such as mental health, sustainability, bullying and safety do not go away. In some cases, it might bring them to the forefront.”
Members of the Youth Council will meet monthly over their 12-month terms. They will help inform development of Council’s Youth Strategy and organise events that help bring young people together in the region.
“We work closely with members to help make any ideas they may have a reality, whilst helping them develop leadership, advocacy and event management skills – all valuable skills that improve job prospects,” said Mrs Allwell.
Over the past few years, Youth Council members have organised a number of exciting events, focusing on themes like connection and mental health. Past events include a pool party in Tamworth, a silent disco, and online events such as a skate deck design contest and region-wide photography competition.
To be eligible for the Youth Council, you have to: be between 15 and 18 years old, live in the Tamworth region, and be passionate about making a difference in the community.
Mrs Allwell said, “You do not have to attend school to be a part of the Youth Council. One of our members in recent years was undertaking a mechanical apprenticeship.”
“We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our past Youth Council members; some are enrolled at university, others have chosen different paths like the military and apprenticeships. One past member even chose to pursue a career in youth services,” she said.
