Oxfam congratulates new parliament, calls for more action on climate, inequality, First People’s rights

Commenting on the 2022 federal election result, Oxfam Australia Chief Executive Lyn Morgain said:

“Oxfam congratulates all candidates elected to the Australian parliament, including our new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and his Labor government.

“Australians have made clear their desire for a different kind of parliament to confront the challenges facing us. They want a parliament that is more representative of their community and their priorities, and that seeks to break the old stalemates in our political system.

“Inequality is growing both within Australia and beyond our borders. The world is facing a climate crisis which is deepening that inequality and, along with COVID-19 and conflicts in various parts of the world, pushing more people into poverty.

“In this next parliament, Australians want to see action on climate change. The pandemic has clearly shown us that we live in an interconnected world and that our health and wellbeing is closely linked to that of others. We showed we can be a generous and compassionate nation – and must continue to grow those ambitions and contribute our fair share as a good global citizen. This will support our efforts towards peace, stability and prosperity in our region and beyond.

“We must also seize the opportunity to take an important step towards justice for First Nations people by supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

“Oxfam is looking forward to working with the Albanese government and all those elected to represent us.”
