One of the City of Parramatta’s most iconic buildings will be lit up in green and gold on Wednesday night as the Matildas continue their campaign for a World Cup finals spot.
A sold-out crowd of 80,000 is set to descend on the City for Wednesday’s all-important Women’s World Cup semi-final at Sydney Olympic Park with thousands more set to watch the action at live sites across the Parramatta CBD.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Sameer Pandey said the City was gripped with football fever and would be putting its hand up to host the State’s formal celebrations for the Matildas if they went all the way.
“We have been football central of this World Cup and what better place to bring Sydney together to applaud our Matildas than in its true heart – Parramatta?”
“We’re lighting up PHIVE – one of our most iconic buildings – and want to see as many local businesses as possible flying the green and gold for Wednesday’s big match.
“Parramatta Square has been home to one of the biggest live sites in Sydney of this World Cup.
“For the past three weeks, it’s been Parramatta’s biggest lounge room with 15,000 fans gathering to watch the action.
“We’ll be cheering so loud from the Square on Wednesday that our Matildas will hear us all the way from Sydney Olympic Park.”
Cr Pandey said the City was gearing up for the site to host its biggest crowd yet with two giant screens in Parramatta Square and a third in adjoining Centenary Square.
The pre-match party will kick-off from 4pm with live music, face painting, food trucks, and panna cages to challenge your mates to a one-on-one showdown.
The live site is at the western end of Parramatta Square just a two-minute walk from Parramatta Station.
Fans are encouraged to bring a blanket or a chair to sit on while they enjoy the match.
The NSW Government will also screen the match at Western Sydney Stadium (CommBank Stadium).
