The City of Launceston is installing a new flood gate barrier system aimed at improving vehicle and pedestrian access to Riverbend Park.
The work will involve widening of the Lindsay Street flood levee to enhance vehicle access and to provide a new dedicated pedestrian access from Lindsay Street into the park.
Footings for a new flood gate barrier system are currently being installed.
While the work has been timed over summer when flood risk is lower, floods can occur at any time of the year.
The Council has mitigation plans in place for the installation of a temporary flood barrier should a flood risk present itself before works are complete in the first quarter of 2021.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the project would improve access to Riverbend Park.
“We’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm Launceston families have demonstrated for Riverbend Park, and we’re thrilled that it’s proven so popular,” Mayor van Zetten said. “This project is about improving both vehicle and pedestrian access into the park from Lindsay Street.
“It will improve sightlines for vehicles entering and exiting the car park, and the dedicated pedestrian access means pedestrians will no longer need to navigate traffic at the main Lindsay St entrance.
“Vehicle access through the main entrance will remain open during the works, and we ask motorists to obey any temporary traffic signage which may be in place.
