Perth proves pitch-perfect with five major hockey events secured

  • Perth to host five high profile hockey events from 2022-2025
  • Combined total of more than 4,500 out-of-state visitors expected
  • Supported by the McGowan Government, through Tourism WA
  • Some of the world’s best men’s and women’s hockey players will be among thousands of visitors to Western Australia for a series of high-profile hockey events from 2022 to 2025.

The competitions include the Australian Under 21 Championships (2022), the Australian Masters Men’s and Women’s Championships (2023), International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League (2024), Australian Under 13 Championships (2024) and the Australian Under 18 Championships (2025).

Supported by the McGowan Government, through Tourism WA, all the events will be delivered by Hockey Australia with support from Hockey WA.

Male and female athletes, ranging in age from under 13 to 35 and above, from every State and Territory will compete, with the opportunity for competitors to show off their skills and potentially be selected to play at higher grades.

The FIH Pro League matches will feature Australia’s flagship men’s and women’s teams, the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos, taking on some of the world’s best international teams.

These five mass participation events are expected to attract a combined total of more than 4,500 people from outside the State to WA and generate visitor spend of more than $11 million over four years.

The events will be played at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University and at some of the best hockey venues in WA.

As stated by Tourism Minister David Templeman:

“Hosting these hockey events is a great opportunity to welcome athletes and their supporters to WA, showcase our fantastic sporting facilities and the many attractions and unique experiences we have to offer visitors as a holiday destination.

“I encourage everyone travelling here to explore our State, whether it’s taking in the stunning Swan River views from Elizabeth Quay, learning more about our history at the award-winning WA Museum Boola Bardip, or travelling further afield to our diverse regional areas.

“Securing these sporting events will bring in a significant number of visitors over the next four years, which is positive news for local businesses, such as tourism operators and accommodation and hospitality providers.”

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Tony Buti:

“WA is the home of the Australian Hockey National Programs, so it is very exciting to be hosting such high-profile hockey events in Perth over the next few years and shows our State Government’s support of the sport.

“On the back of the men’s and women’s national hockey teams’ success at the recent Tokyo Olympics, there is now an even bigger interest in hockey among Australians.

“Hosting these events in Perth will only help to boost that interest and encourage young WA hockey athletes to strive for future success.”
