Premier Jeremy Rockliff has today announced the Tasmanian Government will deliver a clear plan to grow Northern Tasmania’s economy, support local jobs, and secure a strong future for Launceston and the wider North of the State.
The Northern Economic Plan will bring together investment across industry, infrastructure, tourism and workforce development, building on major projects already underway across the region.
A Northern Tasmania Economic Summit will also be held to help bring the private sector, industry, councils, and the community together to support its delivery.
Led by the Premier, the plan will bring together a coordinated package of investments and initiatives to unlock new opportunities and boost confidence right across the city and region.
Premier Rockliff said the Government is focused on practical delivery and backing the Northern Tasmanian economy.
“Northern Tasmania is absolutely critical to our State’s success, and we are rolling up our sleeves and backing it with developing a clear plan to create jobs, grow businesses, and attract new investment,” the Premier said.
“We have heard the community’s concern following the disappointing closure of Boags Brewery as well as ongoing challenges with Liberty Bell Bay and associated supply chains. This is about giving Tasmanians confidence that they can build their future right here.”
A key priority of the Plan will be the revitalisation of the former Boag’s brewery site, ensuring the iconic Launceston asset once again becomes a driver of jobs, investment and activity in the heart of the city.
“The Boags site holds a special place in Launceston’s history, and it has an important role to play in the city’s economic future,” Premier Rockliff said.
“We won’t allow such a significant site to sit idle, we will work with business and industry, Council and the community to ensure it becomes a productive asset once again.
“We’re already seeing strong momentum across Northern Tasmania as we deliver our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, with projects that are creating jobs and unlocking opportunity.
“That includes construction of the $120 million Launceston Heart Centre, upgrades to UTAS Stadium and the Silverdome, $10 million investment into attracting more business events through the new Launceston Convention Centre, and major events like the Foo Fighters that are driving visitation and economic activity.”
“This builds upon investments in the Tamar Valley, including $84 million for the East and West Tamar Highway upgrades, as well as investment in education for the Legana Primary School, and ambulance infrastructure with steps to develop a new ambulance station in Legana underway.
“These are real, on-the-ground investments happening right now, and they form the foundation for the North’s future.
“We will also be advocating for the progress of the Tamar Water Scheme and the Launceston Sewerage improvement program as identified in the Australian Infrastructure Priority List.
“These are intergenerational infrastructure projects that will unlock greater business, industry and job opportunities throughout the region.
“The Northern Economic Plan will build on this to grow jobs, back industry and ensure communities right across Northern Tasmania continue to thrive.”
The Northern Tasmania Economic Summit will be held on July 15 and be open to business and community leaders.
