Planning Minister provides conditional support to planning scheme amendment of former Glen Iris Golf Course

  • Planning Minister has provided conditional support for City of Cockburn’s Amendment No.152
  • A number of modifications have been requested to improve amenity
  • Amendment will facilitate redevelopment of approximately 54 hectares of privately-owned land in Jandakot

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti has provided support for Amendment No.152 of the City of Cockburn’s Town Planning Scheme No.3, subject to modifications that will improve amenity.

The complex scheme amendment will facilitate the development of residential lots, public open space, and other community amenities on approximately 54 hectares of privately-owned land in Jandakot. The land was previously used as Glen Iris Golf Course before it closed in early 2020.

Minister Saffioti has provided support for the amendment and has requested several modifications to be made to provisions related to the proposed new Development Area 45 (DA 45) before giving final approval.

The modifications address community feedback provided during consultation and requires that planning and development of DA 45:

  • promotes the retention of significant mature trees and provides an amount of public space beyond the minimum standards;
  • provides for future active recreational needs of the community;
  • retains an appropriate amount of black cockatoo habitat; and
  • limits the development to a maximum of 250 dwellings until appropriate traffic controls are constructed on Berrigan Drive.

As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

“This amendment will help facilitate a high-quality residential development in our southern suburbs.

“This land was zoned as urban under the Metropolitan Region Scheme, and therefore the underlying intent for the land was urban use.

“I acknowledge some of the concerns raised in the community, however it is important to note the land is privately owned and has already been cleared to facilitate its previous use as a golf course.

“The draft structure plan for the area includes setbacks from existing properties, the retention of around 20 per cent of the land for public open space, plus the delivery of new playing fields for community use.

“The amendment will also require the retention of a significant number of existing mature trees within the redeveloped area.”
