A major centrepiece of the Cook Government’s redevelopment of the former Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) site has now been completed, with the former chimney stack being transformed into a striking public artwork.
Selected after a worldwide call out process, world famous artists ‘MOMO’ – aka David Momyer – of the United States, and Perth born Abdul Abdullah, have combined to transform the iconic 53 metre landmark.
The newly designed chimney stack will simultaneously pay homage to PMH’s past, but also symbolise the dynamic revitalisation of the site into the new ‘1909’ which forms part of the Subi East precinct.
Known as ‘Here Together’, the 360-degree artwork reflects the history of the site as a place of recovery, discovery, and community. It features a vibrant mural and sculptural lighting elements, that is designed to welcome people and generate a sense of joy.
The artwork combines MOMO’s bold, colourful mural style inspired by the former ‘Megazone’ and ‘Radio Lollipop’ rooms at PMH, overlaid with Abdul’s playful exploration of a universal visual language through sculptural neon light elements.
The ‘1909’ is set to deliver a vibrant inner-city village in one of Western Australia’s most desirable suburbs, by supporting high quality urban design, heritage protection, public art, and cultural activities that respond to the area’s environment, climate, and lifestyle.
