Police arrest man after dumping stolen car in CBD carpark

A man who dumped a stolen car in a CBD carpark has been arrested after he was detected speeding across Melbourne’s suburbs this morning.

The stolen Audi SUV was first spotting by the airwing as it travelled outbound on the Westgate Freeway about 12.10am.

At that stage it was believed the driver was travelling at speeds of about 150km/h.

Police followed the car from the air when it was seen to exit the freeway at Forsyth Road and perform a u-turn back onto the freeway toward the city.

A highway patrol unit attempted to intercept the car near Kororoit Creek Road before the driver speed off.

The Airwing in liaison with police units on the ground followed the vehicle onto the Western Ring Road where it was detected travelling up to speeds of 220km/h.

The stolen car then made its way through Sunshine, Footscray back onto the Freeway and into the city before it was dumped in a Flinders Lane carpark.

Police on the ground cordoned off the carpark and searched for the offending driver who was found trying to hide behind a car.

The 41-year-old man from Spotswood was arrested without incident and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The dumped car was found next to another stolen car which police believe is also linked to the man.

A quantity of drugs and property belonging to the man was found in this second vehicle.

The man is expected to be charged in relation to theft of the motor car, unlicensed driving and other driving related offences.

Whilst committing the offences, the man was also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and was issued a $1652 penalty notice.

The directions by the Chief Health Officer, under the State of Disaster declared in Victoria, have been enacted to help stop the spread of Coronavirus
