Police arrest man after setting off flares in Brigadoon

Strike Force Vulcan detectives have charged a 30-year-old man after an incident in Brigadoon at around 7.15am on 13 January 2020.

It is alleged two men in a vehicle were in the car park of a Sales Centre located on Campersic Road and one of the men was in possession of two Wessex orange smoke parachute flares designed to be deployed in emergency situations only.

It is alleged the men fired both flares into the air before leaving the area and did not ensure they had not started a fire.

Both flares were sighted floating above Campersic Road and one started a small fire where it landed in a grass paddock. The owner of the property extinguished the fire.

The area the flares landed is very difficult to access by vehicle and is towards the bottom of the valley. If a fire had of taken hold the outcome would have been catastrophic due to its location and likely burn path. Wind direction at the time was South Westerly and would have pushed the fire down into the valley.

The 30-year-old man from Wanneroo who was the owner of the flares has been charged with Breach of Duty of Person in Control of Ignition Source.

He is due to appear before the Midland Magistrates Court on 7 February 2020. The maximum penalty for this offence is 15 years imprisonment.
