Police charge man after assault of elderly woman in Belmore

A man has been charged with attempted armed robbery and steal from person following a successful public appeal for information made by police in July.

On Saturday (6 July 2019), police attended a grocery store on Hilcrest Street, Wiley Park following reports of an alleged attempted armed robbery.

Police were told a man armed with a knife fled empty-handed after being confronted by the store owner.

About 11.40am on Friday (12 July 2019), a 79-year-old woman was walking along Leyland Parade, Belmore when she was allegedly approached from behind by a man, who grabbed a goldchain she was wearing and snatched it off her neck.

The chain broke in half and the man took half of it along with a crucifix the woman was wearing, before fleeing down Marie Reserve toward Marie Street.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command began investigations and launched a public appeal for information.

Yesterday (Wednesday 4 September 2019), officers attended a correctional facility in Nowra where they charged a 24-year-old man with attempted armed robbery and steal from person.

He was served with two future court attendance notices and will appear before Nowra Local Court on Monday 21 October 2019.
