Police charge man after pursuit at Wollongong 27 September

A man has been charged following a pursuit on the Sydney’s south yesterday.

Just before 2pm (Tuesday 26 September 2023), police attached to Campbelltown Police Area Command attempted to stop a red van travelling through the Campbelltown area.

The vehicle failed to stop, and officers lost sight of the vehicle.

With assistance from PolAir, the vehicle was sighted within the Wollongong area where a short pursuit commenced, however was terminated due to safety reasons.

A short time later, the van was located on Park Road, Helensburgh, having collided with several civilian and police vehicles before stopping.

The driver – a 29-year-old man – was taken to Wollongong Hospital for assessment while the passenger – a 34-year-old woman – has been taken to Wollongong Police Station where she is assisting police with inquiries.

Upon release from hospital, the 29-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with 12 offences including:

– Never licensed person drive vehicle on road

– Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously

– Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous

– Predatory driving

– Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention

– Not give particulars to other driver (7 counts)

The man was refused to appear before Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 28 September 2023).
