Police charge man with firearm and drug offences in Koonawarra

A man has been charged with firearm and drug offences in the state’s south overnight.

About 9.25pm (Thursday 5 March 2020), a motorcycle was travelling along Wyndarra Way, Koonawarra, when he spotted police. In attempt to avoid them, the rider has crashed the vehicle and fled on foot.

Following a short foot pursuit, officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to apprehend the man. During a struggle with him, police discovered he was carrying a shortened, single barrell shot gun.

Once the gun was secured, police conducted a search of the man and seized cash, MDMA, and seven rounds of ammunition.

The man, aged 27, was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, possess unregistered/prohibited firearm, not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm, supply prohibited drug greater than an indictable and less than a commercial quantity, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, assault officer in execution of duty and resist officer in execution of duty

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 6 March 2020).
