Police charge woman with COVID related offence

A 23 year old woman has been charged with a COVID related offence after a vehicle was allegedly broken into near the Launceston General Hospital on Wednesday night.

Police were called to the area about 8.45pm and located four people – two males and two women.

As a result, a 23 year old female, was arrested and charged with unlawfully possessing dangerous article in a public place, possessing an implement or instrument with intent to commit a crime and failing to comply with a direction of the Director of Public Health. The latter charge in relates to her not having a reasonable excuse to be away from her residence.

Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Northern CIB on 131444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au.

Police would like to remind the public to only be absent from their primary residences with a lawful reason (as outlined by the Director of Public Health) and that incidents where a false claim by a person to be infected with COVID-19 will be taken very seriously.

Under the Emergency Management Act, there is a penalty of up to 100 penalty units ($16,800) or imprisonment not exceeding 6 months for failing to comply with a lawful requirement or direction of an emergency management worker.
