As Formula One fans flock to Albert Park to enjoy this year’s Grand Prix, police will be out and about keeping crowds safe across the four days.
Victoria Police, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, State Emergency Service, Ambulance Victoria, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and other organisations have been working together to ensure everyone can have a safe, secure and enjoyable Grand Prix.
Those attending the race will likely notice the highly-visible police presence both inside and outside the event, as well as at transport hubs.
With hundreds of thousands of people expected to come through the gate police will be closely monitoring crowd behaviour and intervening if any anti-social or criminal behaviour is detected.
Superintendent Tony Silva said police are asking everyone to be mindful of how their behaviour affects other patrons.
“Grand Prix crowds have generally been very well behaved in the past however we want to be very clear that police will not tolerate any anti-social or disruptive behaviour,” said Supt Silva.
“Police will be focused on the responsible consumption of alcohol by anyone attending the Grand Prix, including at the trackside, when departing the event and attending nearby venues and public transport.
“We want to remind everyone that the consumption of alcohol on the streets and roads within the City of Port Phillip is prohibited at all times.
“Police will also be running operations outside the precinct to crack down on those who get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“If you’re going to drink, don’t get behind the wheel and plan for an alternative journey home.
Transit police and Protective Services Officers will be making sure the crowds coming in and going home via public transport do so safely.
“We want people to enjoy the event but more importantly, to get home safely.”
The 2019 Formula 1 Grand Prix runs from 14 March to 17 March.
