Police Investigate Richmond Tobacco Store Fire

Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a tobacco store was attacked by arsonists in Richmond early this morning.

Neighbouring residents woke to the sound of loud bangs coming from the Bridge Road convenience store about 3.30am.

After observing the entire business engulfed in flames, they managed to escape the building and notify emergency services.

There was no one inside the shop at the time and no injuries to any nearby residents.

The business sustained significant damage during the blaze.

An arson chemist will attend the scene this morning to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspicious and targeted.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, with footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or anonymously at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Quotes attributable to Yarra Crime Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Ruby Roberts:

“There is significant risk to the life and property of innocent parties due to these fires and the reckless nature of them,” she said.

“This is another example where these arsonists do not care about the danger their actions pose to surrounding residents who are asleep at the time most of these incidents occur.

“Not to mention the huge financial and emotional impact this would have on the business owners whose stores are being targeted.

“If people are aware of illicit activity linked to a tobacco store or other business near them, we need them to come forward with that information so police can act.”
