Police investigating dangerous driving through emergency scene

Tasmania Police is investigating after a motorcycle rider drove dangerously and at high-speed through a cordoned-off emergency scene on the Bass Highway last week.

Inspector Steve Jones said the incident put the lives of police officers, paramedics and TFS personnel at risk.

“There was a road closure in place to allow for emergency services to respond to what was sadly a fatal car crash,” he said.

“The rider of the motorcycle proceeded through the road closure, accelerated past police officers who were indicating for it to stop and weaved its way through the crash scene, nearly losing traction and narrowly missing everyone present.”

“At the time the scene was blocked by police, ambulance and TFS vehicles, all with emergency lights activated.”

“Police and emergency services workers need to be able to do their jobs and assist others, without putting their own lives on the line. This serious and thoughtless incident put our first responders in extreme danger.”

Anyone with information about the incident, or who saw a motorcycle travelling at high speed on the Bass Highway near Sassafras on Thursday 13 January, is asked to contact Devonport police on 131 444.
