Police lay assault charge at Gold Coast

A man has been charged over the serious assault of a man at an Upper Coomera gym last week.

Yesterday, officers from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad executed a search warrant at an Upper Coomera residence locating and arresting a 24-year-old man wanted in connection with the unprovoked assault of a 20 year-old-man at the Days Road gym last Monday.

“Violence within our community will not be tolerated, particularly in a public place, and will be promptly investigated,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Galpin, Major and Organised Crime Squad said.

“We have also identified the second suspect, and I encourage that individual to surrender himself to police.”

It will be alleged the male victim was in the open area of the gym, when two men approached him as he was looking at his mobile phone.

One of the men then struck the victim to the head multiple times with a five-kilogram weight.

The victim fell to the ground, and was further assaulted before being assisted by staff and other members of the public. The two men then left the gym.

The victim later attended the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment which required surgery, however his injuries are non-life-threatening injuries.

The man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on February 24.
