Police lay charges – Assault Police in Alice Springs 4 April

Northern Territory Police have charged an 18-year-old man after he allegedly assaulted five police officers during an arrest on Saturday.

Police conducting Point of Sale Intervention duties at an Alice Springs CBD liquor store attempted to arrest the man on an outstanding warrant.

The offender resisted arrest, and allegedly punched one officer several times to the head and also attempted to bite the officer. A second officer came to assist and the offender allegedly spat and attempted to bite this officer as well.

Three off-duty members intervened and the man continued to resist arrest, allegedly spitting and kicking at all officers involved. He was eventually controlled and conveyed to the Alice Springs Watch House, where he remained uncooperative and allegedly again spat directly into the faces of attending officers.

The 18-year-old has been charged with:

  • Assault police x 5
  • Resist police x 3
  • Breach bail x 2

He was remanded to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.

The officers involved attended Alice Springs Hospital for disease testing. One officer was treated for a mild concussion and other minor injuries. All members returned to duty to complete their shifts.

Acting Superintendent Michael Milde said, “The offender’s behaviour is disgusting and the fact that our officers returned to duty following this incident is testament to the dedication of our members.”
