Police lay charges over drink driving in Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police have charged two drivers in relation to a number of traffic offences committed in Alice Springs yesterday.

At around 5:10pm, it is alleged a vehicle carrying two people rear ended a stationary vehicle that was turning left onto Lindsay Avenue from Undoolya Road. The offending vehicle has then turned onto Lindsay Avenue and after a short while the 42-year-old female driver has exited the vehicle and fled.

She was apprehended by police and returned a road side alcohol reading of 0.201%. She was later charged with:

  • Driving with a high range breath alcohol content
  • Driving whilst unlicensed
  • Driving an unregistered and uninsured car

The 42-year-old male passenger in the offending vehicle was issued a defect notice for the car to be towed due to extensive damage.

It is alleged the male then attempted to drive the vehicle just after police had left the scene.

The male was subsequently stopped by police a short time later and returned a road side alcohol reading of 0.190%. He was later charged with:

  • Driving with a high range breath alcohol content
  • Driving a defected, unsafe car
  • Driving an unregistered and uninsured car

Both offenders were bailed to appear before Alice Springs Local Court on 13 October 2021.

Acting Senior Sergeant Leith Phillips said, “This is a disgraceful scenario with two highly intoxicated drivers, who were irresponsible and reckless as to the safety of others. The first driver has allegedly smashed into the back of another motorist who was only trying to drive safely, she then left the scene of the crash. The passenger was spoken to by police, told not to drive and spoken to about the damage to the car. He has then decided to drive anyway and put our community at risk.

There are people dying on our roads because of the Fatal Five. Drink driving is one of the most dangerous of these factors and both these drivers seemed not to care. “
