Northern Territory Police have charged an 18-year-old male for allegedly assaulting two police officers earlier this morning.
At around 2:15am, police attended to a disturbance at a licensed premise in Darwin CBD.
The 18-year-old was allegedly aggressive towards police. During the process of arrest, the man has kicked a police officer in the stomach.
He was taken to Darwin Watch House where he continued to allegedly threaten police, and attempted to assault another officer by kicking him to the head.
The male has been charged;
- assault a member of the police force x 2
- disorderly behaviour in a police station
- fail to leave licensed premises
- fight in a public place
- resist police in execution of duty.
He will appear in court today.
Two males, both aged 19, were also arrested at the time of the disturbance and later released with infringement notices for disorderly behaviour in a public place.
Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said “No one leaves their home with the expectation they will be assaulted while serving and protecting the community. I commend our members for resolving this violent situation quickly.”
Under section 189A of the Criminal Code Act 1983, assaults on police or emergency workers carry maximum penalties of imprisonment of 16 years.
