Police make arrest – Aggravated assault – Nightcliff 22 August

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man this afternoon after efforts to apprehend him at a residence in Nightcliff took over 24 hours.

Around 6pm on 20 August 2023, the 30-year-old man was allegedly involved in an aggravated assault of a woman known to him.

The victim was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries and was later discharged from hospital.

Early the next day, the man was located by police at a residence on Gardenia Street, Nightcliff, where he refused to exit.

Officers established a cordon that ran throughout the day as negotiators worked to resolve the situation.

All household members, except for one man known to the man, eventually exited the house of their own volition.

Around 1:15pm today, the man was apprehended when he exited the residence and threatened police when a tasered was deployed and he taken into custody without injury. He is expected to be charged later this evening.

The location remains cordoned off while police finalise investigations.

Detective Acting Superintendent Matt Akers said, “The man was actively engaging with us. Police respond in accordance with best practice to minimise harm to the public and officers involved. Our priority when dealing with uncooperative individuals is always to take a peaceful, measured approach, and that often takes time.

“The arrest and the alleged incidents prior remain under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444. You can also contact anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
