Police seek witnesses – Reckless driving in Darwin

Northern Territory Police are seeking witnesses to contact them in relation to a reckless driving incident in Pinelands overnight.

At 9:40pm a Blue Mitsubishi Outlander station wagon missing a rear left tyre, was observed driving inbound towards Darwin on the outbound lanes at speed and into oncoming traffic, on the Stuart Highway.

Police who observed the vehicle pursued the vehicle up to Foundation Road, at which point it crossed onto the inbound lanes and continued at high speed through the Berrimah Road traffic lights. The vehicle then drove off the road and struck a tree near the Berrimah defence base.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was not injured and was immediately arrested by police at the scene.

Throughout the incident a number of motorists had to take evasive action to avoid the vehicle. Police are particularly interested in a motorcycle rider, who may or may not have been struck by the vehicle when it approached Foundation Road.

The 41-year-old driver has been charged with Drive High Range, Drive Unlicensed, and Drive in a speed and manner dangerous during a pursuit. He will appear before court at a later date.

Police urge anyone who witnessed this incident, or has information which may assist with this investigation to contact police on 131 444 or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
