Police seek witnesses to Hawthorn East car arson

Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a criminal damage by fire of a stolen car in Hawthorn East, earlier this year.

It’s believed unknown offenders set fire to a stolen BMW, parked in a carpark on Auburn Road on Saturday 9 January, around 9.10pm.

A man was seen at a nearby petrol station, filling up a jerry can with a small amount of petrol, before returning to the carpark where the stolen car was.

The fire was detected a short time later.

Police would like to speak to the man pictured below, who they believe can assist them with their enquiries.

He is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance with short brown hair and has a distinctive tattoo on his lower leg.

He was wearing blue shorts and a black tee shirt with distinctive red writing at the time.
