Police treating fires as suspicious in Winthrop

Strike Force Vulcan officers are investigating a series of deliberately lit fires at Robert Street Park, located on North Lake Road in Winthrop.

About 11.30pm on 16 December 2021, Department of Fire and Emergency Services were called to the area after members of the public spotted flames coming from several grasstrees.

Several other fires have occurred recently in the same area. These fires burnt a significant number of grasstrees and posed a serious risk to surrounding homes and nearby businesses. The fires occurred:-

• Around 1.30am on Friday, 17 December 2021;

• Around 2.45am on Friday, 7 January 2022; and

• Around 4.45am on Saturday, 8 January 2022.

Investigators from Strike Force Vulcan are seeking the public’s assistance to identify the three people pictured in the attached vision, who were in the area around the time of the 16 December fire and who they believe can assist them with this investigation.

Anyone with information relating to these fires is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au. Rewards of up to $25,000 are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
