Police update: Mt Anne bushwalkers rescued by helicopter

A 47-year old Wynyard man and his 20-year old son have been rescued this evening, after becoming disoriented while walking the Mt Anne circuit.

Approximately 7:15pm the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) detected the activation of a personal locator beacon in the Southwest National Park near the Mt Anne circuit. Tasmania Police was advised of the coordinates and search operations commenced. The Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed, however on its first attempt was forced to turn back due to low cloud and heavy rain. A second attempt at 10:40pm was successful and both walkers were found safe and well.

The men had been walking the circuit over 3 days and were due out this evening; but lost the track earlier in the day and became disoriented, before activating their beacon.

Southern District duty officer, Inspector Doug Oosterloo, reminded walkers that:

“Things can change rapidly and even the most capable bushwalkers can encounter problems. These men were not expecting to become lost. Fortunately, they were well equipped and had the good sense to carry a personal locator beacon, which greatly assisted in their rescue.

Hazardous conditions forecast for the next few days may impede potential rescue operations. With this in mind, walkers need to take extra precautions.”
