Police update: Police urge people to come forward over recovered firearm linked to 2012 Rochedale South murder

Detectives are appealing for information regarding a recovered firearm linked to the 2012 homicide of John Anthony Lazzaro at Rochedale South.

Following a renewed public appeal in April 2022, Homicide and Logan detectives have progressed investigations into the shooting death of the 56-year-old man at his Priestdale Road house just before 11pm on April 11, 2012.

Detective Acting Inspector Daniel Cunningham said police could now confirm an unregistered firearm recovered in Queensland – a Browning 1900 .32 calibre semi-automatic – was the weapon used to fatally shoot John Lazzaro.

“I can confirm following ballistics and forensic examination, police are in possession of the firearm used to kill John Lazzaro,” Detective Acting Inspector Cunningham said.

“We are continuing to conduct enquiries and have identified several people who have possessed this unregistered firearm since 2012.

“Police believe those directly involved in the murder of John Lazzaro had links to the Bandidos Outlaw Motorcycle Gang,”

“We know loyalties and relationships in these criminal gangs changes over time, so as we continue to pursue leads, we would urge those with information to consider the significant reward still on offer and come forward now,” Detective Acting Inspector Cunningham said.

Inquiries into the recovered firearm resulted in homicide detectives with assistance from the NSW Police Force executing a search warrant on June 9 at a NSW address where a 45-year-old man who was questioned regarding his knowledge of the firearm and this investigation remains ongoing.

A $500,000 reward, announced in 2019, remains on offer for any information leading to the arrest or apprehension of a person responsible for Mr Lazzaro’s murder. In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for the murder.

Investigators today released footage of murder weapon. Anyone with information to help solve the case is urged to come forward.
