Prepare Now For 2024 Top End Bushfire Season

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) are reminding Territorians to prepare and update their bushfire survival plan ahead of the Top End Bushfire season.

Residents and landowners are urged to take proactive measures to protect yourself, your family and your property. Key safety measures include:

  • Updating your Bushfire Survival Plan
  • Ensuring you have 4 metre firebreaks around your property, with vegetation no higher than 50mm
  • Clearing and removing all loose debris

Residents are reminded that NTFRS, Bushfires NT and local contractors will also be conducting extensive fuel reduction burning over the coming months across the Top End.

There is a possibility that these controlled burns may impact surrounding areas with smoke and falling ash. As such it is recommended that residents:

  • Close windows and bring any washing in.
  • Anticipate smoky conditions for the duration of the burns.
  • When driving pay attention and if the roads are smoke affected, turn on your lights and drive carefully.

Bushfires can be unpredictable and dangerous. Taking these simple steps can save properties and most importantly, lives.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Stephen Hunter said “It is important that you have these conversations now and for all family members to understand the plan of action.

“Last year, nearly 43 million hectares of land burnt across the Northern Territory. The best time to prepare for bushfires was yesterday, the next best time to prepare is today.”

Territorians can stay up to date with Australian Warning System by checking the Fire Incident Map or subscribing to the alerts and warnings on the NTPFES website.
