Protecting Tasmanian tenants and landlords

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

The Tasmanian Government continues to support Tasmanian tenants and landlords through the challenges faced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Government acted quickly to protect and support residential tenants at risk of eviction as a result of the impacts of COVID-19.

We extended the initial emergency period in the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 until 30 September 2020, and issued further notices under the COVID-19 Disease Emergency (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2020 to prevent rent increases and evictions.

These protections have enabled Tasmanian tenants to stay in their homes as they deal with the economic uncertainty associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government is closely monitoring the situation and considering all of the options available, and we will make a decision well before the emergency period is set to end on 30 September 2020.

I would like to thank Tasmanian residential tenants, landlords and property agents for their understanding and patience during this very difficult and challenging period.

Our Government recognises that it has not been an easy time for many, and we will continue to provide support where possible.
