Protest at Capricornia Correctional Centre

Queensland Corrective Services Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations, Gary McCahon has praised officers at Capricornia Correctional Centre for their ongoing response to protest activity in the centre today.

Deputy Commissioner McCahon said officers responded to the incident with professionalism, enacting emergency response plans to lock down the centre.

The incident started at about 10am this morning when some prisoners began damaging property and threatening other prisoners.

As at 1pm, a group of about 30 prisoners had been contained by officers in a secure area of the centre and had retreated onto the roof of an activities building.

Plans are in place to reinforce the centre’s staffing with officers from other centres around the State, including emergency response teams and dog squad units.

QPS, QAS and QFES are also assisting with the response.

We remain unaware of any injuries to officers at this stage.

One prisoner has been transported to hospital with an injury, but it is unknown at this stage if it is related to the protest activity.

We will provide further updates as they become available.
