The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working to improve safety and traffic flow at the Mornington Roundabout and is seeking the public’s input.

Community consultation opened today and views are sought on issues such as safety, traffic flow, facilities for public and active transport, and environmental factors such as lighting, noise, and vegetation.

Liberal Member for Franklin, Jacquie Petrusma, said the feedback will be used to develop the Mornington Traffic Solution Study and to identify potential options for upgrades to the roundabout and the connecting road network.

“The South Arm Highway is the main access point to the Tasman Highway for the south-eastern region of the Clarence Municipality. It is important to regional and local communities and economies. The corridor carries heavy freight vehicles, school buses and tourist traffic, as well as commuters,” Mrs Petrusma said.

“The Tasman Highway Corridor Study identified this location of the greater Hobart road network as a high priority for future traffic capacity improvements.”

Liberal Member for Franklin, Nic Street, said the area is experiencing continuing traffic growth, which is projected to increase significantly in coming decades, with additional demand affecting five intersections within a 750-metre section of the South Arm Highway.

The Study is investigating improvements in this area, including the Mornington roundabout junction with Cambridge Road, the Mornington Road junction with the South Arm Highway, and the Mornington interchange with the Tasman Highway,” Mr Street said.

“It will use extensive traffic surveys and traffic modelling, as well as stakeholder consultation and engineering investigations to assess possible options.”

Public consultation is open from Monday, 11 October to Sunday, 24 October 2021. People can have their say by visiting the Transport website: www.transport.tas.gov.au/Mornington and navigating to the Mornington Traffic Solution Study page.

The community will have further opportunities to have a say on shortlisted improvement options and concept drawings for a preferred option as the project progresses.
