Residents living in areas with non-potable water supplies are being prioritised as part of changes to Council’s popular rainwater tank rebate scheme to boost resilience and sustainability across the region.
Western Downs Regional Council has endorsed changes to the scheme, in a bid to encourage the rural community to install rainwater tanks on their property and provide sustainable solutions for rural towns.
Council Spokesperson for Utilities Councillor Peter Saxelby said Council would now offer two rebates per week solely for applicants without access to potable reticulated water.
“Council is focused on sustainable planning for the future and supporting residents to install rainwater tanks on their properties is a simple and effective way to boost resilience across the Western Downs,” Cr Saxelby said.
“Council’s rainwater tank rebate scheme has been hugely successful, with 158 tank rebates allocated to date, which means we are significantly enhancing water storage capacity across the region.”
Cr Saxelby said Council had also introduced a new rebate category to help bolster resilience.
“The new category will offer a $2,000 rebate to residents who are installing tanks with more than 40,000L capacity,” he said.
“This can mean the application can include more than one tank to achieve this capacity and is about increasing the reliability of supply of clean drinking water for residents in non-potable areas.
“This is a simple, effective way to improve water access for all Western Downs residents and I encourage the community to take advantage of this fantastic initiative.”
