Recovery campaign urges sneaky pre-Christmas short breaks

A new tourism campaign has been launched today encouraging Aussies to take a ‘sneaky short break’ to the Southern Queensland Country region before Christmas, aimed at supporting bushfire and drought-affected regions.

The $100,000 campaign funded by the Palaszczuk Government is being delivered by Southern Queensland Country Tourism (SQCT) in partnership with Southern Downs Regional Council and Granite Belt Wine Tourism to drive visitor expenditure back into the region.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones encouraged visitors to explore the unique tourism experiences on offer in the region.

“Tourism is crucial to this region. That’s why we’re delivering this new campaign to drive a boost in sales and support local businesses in the lead up to Christmas,” Ms Jones said.

“The people who live in this region have endured a series of challenges – from drought to bushfire already this year.

“What better way to help locals than to book a holiday, eat out and enjoy beautiful local wine and scenery?” Ms Jones said.

“Through this campaign, not only do we anticipate a short-term injection into the local economy to help those struggling, but to also elevate the region on to holiday ‘must do’ lists for future.

“It’s a great time to visit – you can see the resilience of the region with local produce blooming and businesses and residents ready to welcome visitors.”

SQCT Chief Executive Officer Peter Homan said almost 50 holiday deals had just been released promoting the region as the perfect spring – summer short break getaway.

“Now’s the perfect time to snap up a great pre-Christmas holiday deal – Toowoomba is blooming, the apple blossoms and grape vines are budding on the Granite Belt and the wildflowers are sprouting in the Western Country… local wine and beautiful seasonal food is being served at our restaurants, spring is in full swing,” Mr Homan said.

“The campaign includes the creation of a range of new social media and online content including imagery and videos featuring food and wine, outdoor experiences, accommodation and an authentic local welcome to entice the South East Queensland drive market to take a short break.”

A record 2.2 million domestic tourists spent $768.9 million in the Southern Queensland Country region in the year ending June 2019.
