Recycled artwork lights up gantry

Be sure to visit Junction Square by night for a spectacular feast for the eyes.

Sydney artist Chloe Alice from In Colour Creative has lent one of her recycled artworks to Wodonga Council, which is proudly hanging from the gantry at Junction Square.

The work, Capitalist Bloom featured at Rainbow Serpent festival last year and comes with a powerful message.

“They are gumnuts, and they are to showcase what is happening to our native environment and I hope that they bring awareness, but also create beautiful light and ambience in your city,” Chloe said.

“I have brought it here to showcase a drastic look at where we’re headed in the future if we don’t be mindful and responsible with waste and recycling.”

All the materials used were recycled, even the lights which were sourced from her place of employment – the Seymour Centre, a theatre in Sydney.

“The recycled items used include an old factory light dome, which is the silver dome you can see,” Chloe said.

“There’s also recycled plywood from an old stage at the Seymour Centre to make the inside bit that holds the tubing and the plastic tubing is from reverse garbage, it’s tubing from an old aquarium water tank.”

Months of work went into creating the artwork, which will be on display until mid-August.

Chloe’s background is in lighting design for theatre and music and she also creates installation art and sculptures.

“I have wired every part of them up, built every part of them – the carpentry, the sewing – all parts of them are made by me,” she said.

While the artwork will not be permanently on display at Junction Square, Chloe said it was important to move them on to spread their message.

“Hopefully it will get moved on to another spot becuase the more I re-use them, then that suits the purpose even more of me taking those products out of the recycling system,” Chloe said.

“Capitalist Bloom is all about how much man-made products are in our environment and how we are losing our native nature and animals.”
