Red Cross shops reopen across NSW & Victoria amid call for fresh volunteers

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across NSW and Victoria, Red Cross shops are open for business again and are calling for new volunteers.

Australian Red Cross Head of Retail Richard Wood said that with a number of volunteers in high-risk groups there’s a pressing need for newcomers.

“Some of our older volunteers are understandably being particularly cautious as they re-enter communities post lock-down, deciding to pause their volunteering commitments,” he said.

“With the lifting of restrictions our shops are experiencing increased demand for our goods and services. We welcome anyone looking to learn valuable life skills to sign up as a volunteer.

“Volunteering is for everyone. From people looking for friendship, to newly arrived migrants wanting to develop their English language skills, to those with a passion for sustainable fashion, and job seekers keen for work experience in the retail sector,” said Mr Wood.

“We provide training, and no previous experience is required.

“Best of all volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to communities facing tough times. Proceeds go to the life-changing work of Red Cross.

“The sale of goods in our shops could be used to fund a daily phone call to support elderly Australians to stay safe and independent at home, or hot meals for teenagers dealing with homelessness, or clean drinking water for communities who are living in poverty,” said Mr Wood.

Red Cross Shops across Australia adhere to all COVID-19 requirements, in the interests of keeping staff, volunteers and communities safe.
