Reef Discovery Course offers A-Z for Great Barrier Reef

An on-line education package that aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, its cultural connections, biological diversity, management and protection is now available online.

Assistant Director – Reef Stewardship for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Fiona Merida said the Reef Discovery Course was developed by the Authority to inspire people to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef, how valuable it is and how to deliver accurate information about it in an interesting and memorable way.

“To date 63 Master Reef Guides have undertaken the course, and dozens of tourism operators and their crew have registered for the course,” Ms Merida said.

“We have now opened the course more broadly to the tourism industry along the Great Barrier Reef coast, as well as to those who promote and market the Reef nationally and internationally. The Reef Discovery course is for anyone with an interest in the Great Barrier Reef and a passion for discovery.

“The self-paced course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, its rich cultural connections, amazing biological diversity and how it is managed and protected.

“Whether you are a “surface skimmer” – focused on the need-to-know basics, or a “deep diver” – delving more deeply into the course where more information is revealed, you can undertake as many modules and tests as you desire.

“Most importantly once you have completed the course, go and see the reef for yourself – we know you will love it and want to help protect it.”
