REISSUE: Section 194k amendments passes second reading in Upper House

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

One of my key priorities as Attorney-General is protecting the rights of victims and survivors of crime.

That is why I am pleased the second reading regarding amendments to section 194K of Tasmania’s Evidence Act 2001 to provide victims of sexual assault the right to speak out publicly were passed by the Legislative Council today.

These legislative amendments will allow victims to tell their story without a court order if they wish to do so while also maintaining an important series of safeguards for victims and those who cannot provide consent.

This Bill is the product of extensive consultation with the legal sector, survivors and their representatives. I personally thank them for their valuable input and, in the case of survivors, for their enormous bravery in doing so.

Our Government has initiated a range of reforms since 2014 that aim to protect victims and survivors of crime and this will continue to be a strong focus for me as Attorney-General.
