Macquarie University is paying tribute to the life and legacy of Sir Christopher Ondaatje, an extraordinary explorer, author, philanthropist and champion of education, who died on 20 July 2026, aged 93.
Sir Christopher’s connection with Macquarie University was marked by both a recognition of his commitment to exploration and knowledge, and a lasting physical presence on campus.
In 2011, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by Macquarie University for his distinguished contributions as a financier, explorer, author and philanthropist. It was an honour that reflected a life characterised by curiosity, adventure and a deep commitment to learning.
His name also lives on at Macquarie through Sir Christopher Ondaatje Avenue, which runs through the University’s Wallumattagal Campus.
Following a successful career in finance and publishing, Sir Christopher devoted much of his later life to exploring the world and documenting the journeys of earlier explorers.

His work took him across Africa and into the history of figures such as David Livingstone, while his writing reflected his enduring fascination with the people, places and stories that shape our understanding of the world.
Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton said the avenue is “a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by discovery”.
“His commitment to education and knowledge was also evident in his philanthropy, which supported universities, cultural institutions and organisations in Australia, Britain and Canada,” Professor Dowton said.
“These qualities – curiosity, exploration, generosity and a belief in the power of education – resonate strongly with Macquarie University’s own values.
“For the thousands of students, staff and visitors who travel along Sir Christopher Ondaatje Avenue each year, his name is now part of the fabric of the University.”
Macquarie University extends its deepest condolences to Sir Christopher’s family, friends and to the many communities and organisations around the world whose lives were touched by his generosity and remarkable achievements.
