Residents invited to community discussion to assess flooding mitigation options for Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square

The City of Greater Bendigo is holding a community discussion from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday March 5, at the Gateway Function Centre, 26 High St, Kangaroo Flat as part of its Flood Resilience Study for Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square.

The City is undertaking the Flood Resilience Study to determine the needs of infrastructure to reduce the potential impacts of flooding in Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square in the future and the community discussions have been a key part of the project to engage with members of the community since the project commenced eight months ago.

City of Greater Bendigo Presentation and Assets Director Debbie Wood said technical analysis undertaken by specialist engineers, Water Modelling Solutions, in the initial stages of the study has found that 127 buildings, in the area are at high risk of flooding above floor specifically as a result of large rainfall events causing overflow of local creeks and waterways.

“Following initial community input from July to September 2019, a total of 41 mitigation options were considered. All to determine if they can provide protection from potential flooding and if they are feasible to implement,” Ms Wood said.

“The options were then reviewed by a project control group, relevant State Government agencies and the City to be narrowed down as 10 options, for a more detailed assessment.

“The types of options that have now been further investigated include: levees; pipe upgrades; detention basins in identified locations around Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square. Modifications to upstream reservoirs are also considered.

“We are now very keen to find out resident’s thoughts on these options to assist us in our decision making process and the final project recommendations.

“It’s a great opportunity for residents to find out the most up to date information and ask the important questions.”

The Flood Resilience Options and Solutions community discussion will take place from 5.30 to 7.30pm on Thursday March 5 at the Gateway Function Centre, 26 High St, Kangaroo Flat can be made.
