Hawkesbury City Council is pleased to announce that a community nominated project for Richmond Swimming Centre has been successful in public votes for My Community Project, a new funding program launched by the NSW Government.
Over $60,000 will be awarded for the installation of additional permanent shade structures and accessible seating, including wheelchair access to tables, which will back onto existing pool shelters and seating.
The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Barry Calvert said the additional shade would improve the amenity of the outdoor swimming centre and encourage the community to use this recreational facility.
“It’s great news that this project was successful in the public vote and that the facility will receive funding of $61,144 for the Hawkesbury community,” the Mayor said.
“This is a wonderful project because it will promote sun safety by offering greater protection from sun exposure and potentially reduce the risk of skin cancer.
“It will also create a more comfortable, pleasant and inclusive environment around our swimming facilities,” Councillor Calvert added.
“The addition of 64 square metres of shade plus extra tables and bench seating – catering for wheelchair use – will provide greater comfort and sun protection for thousands of school children from over 30 local schools, families, and the many other people who come to Richmond Swimming Centre.
“Council looks forward to delivering this project to our community.”
The Mayor also congratulated Hawkesbury residents for their high motivation and involvement in My Community Project.
“My thanks go to the local resident who nominated the project at Richmond Swimming Centre, which was supported and sponsored by Council, and I also thank the community members who voted for the Richmond Swimming Centre and several other local community projects.
“Congratulations to the other successful local project recipients: Hawkesbury Men’s Shed – new Men’s Shed at Australiana Pioneer Village; Wisemans Ferry Forgotten Valley Association – community defibrillator project; and Richmond Players Inc. – new sound and lighting equipment. I look forward to receiving updates about these projects as they are completed.”

About My Community Project
This is the first year of My Community Project funding. A total of 61,437 people across NSW voted for their favourite projects. Each project was required to have a sponsor for project management. All projects were also required to demonstrate that they would help improve the wellbeing of local communities.
The ‘My Community Project’ funding program has been made possible by the NSW Generations Fund.
The new program will be reviewed following its first round to ensure it is delivering on its objectives, including an assessment of the community experience.
