Rockhampton Region will kick start its Australia Day celebrations on Wednesday, 26 January at 3.30pm with a citizenship ceremony to welcome over 40 new Aussies at the Kershaw Gardens.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said our new citizens are from 14 countries, including New Zealand, Thailand, Fiji, China, Malaysia, India, Philippines, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Nepal, United Kingdom and Brazil, and will join thousands of other Australians who are celebrating their citizenship on our national day.
“Australian citizenship ceremonies are an important part of our nation’s celebrations, with more people becoming citizens on Australia Day than any other day of the year,” Mayor Williams said.
“I am proud to be presiding over the ceremony, which will also include a special performance from 2021 Young Citizen of the Year, and talented musician, Denvah.
“Australia Day gives all citizens, whether by birth or choice, the opportunity to openly reflect on what it means to be an Aussie and to celebrate our great nation — our rich indigenous and migrant history and our promising future.
“Our Australia Day Great Australian Bites event will feature water slides for the kids to cool down, live music on stage and food vendors including an Aussie BBQ and licenced bar.
“For nostalgia, we will enjoy the Thong Toss, Backyard Cricket, the Aussie Biscuit Challenge and the popular family movie Red Dog will cap off a great Australia Day.
“This is an un-ticketed event and admission is free, we encourage you to wear a mask and please check-in when you arrive.
“I encourage everyone on Australia Day to celebrate the values that make us proud to call ourselves Australian, including respect for the freedom and dignity of others, the rule of law, democracy and a fair go for all.”
