Rockliff’s glass house of backflips 17 November 2023

Tas Labor

Given the list of Liberal backflips in recent memory is longer than the never-delivered, four-lane Midland Highway, Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s new-found obsession with the term is more than a bit rich.

In the past 18 months alone we’ve seen the Liberals backflip on their commitments to:

  • only govern in majority
  • deliver a budget surplus
  • forced council mergers (at least once, maybe twice)
  • no new taxes (salmon tax, fire tax)
  • ban conversion therapy
  • cap power prices
  • leave the National Electricity Market
  • build the North West Transmission Development in full
  • build Marinus in full

This adds to:

  • northern suburbs light rail
  • the location of the new northern prison (twice)
  • closing Ashley by 2024
  • keeping Tasmania debt free
  • “no moratorium on the salmon industry”
  • building the Spirits in Tasmania
  • the bin tax; point of consumption tax
  • lowering the school starting age

At a personal level, we’ve even seen the Premier backflip on being the Health Minister “because it was so important to him”.

And who could forget the underground bus mall?

As the age old adage goes, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks.
