Rockliff’s suggestion Tasmanians use loans to pay power bills is unacceptable

Tasmanian Labor

Jeremy Rockliff continues to show how out of touch he is by suggesting Tasmanians take out a loan to pay their power bills from a scheme that likely does not apply to them.

Earlier this week, he told Parliament he had extended the No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) to support people who are finding it difficult to pay their power bills.

What Premier Rockliff did not mention was that NILS loans can only be used to pay for utilities by people fleeing family violence.

Today, the Premier was again unable to explain how his own Government’s policies work.

In trying to spin what NILS would cover, he has caused confusion and mislead Tasmanians about the support available to them.

He refuses to accept power bills have skyrocketed, while his solution to ease power bill shock is to give out loans, a measure no Tasmanian should have to take.

With power prices going up by nearly 12 per cent the Government voted against Labor’s plan to cap power prices.

Instead of backing a cap on power prices Premier Rockliff has instead recommended Tasmanians take out a loan from NILS that most cannot even access.

The Premier has failed to get the basics right by making sure Tasmanians can access Tasmanian power at Tasmanian prices.
