A re-elected Liberals and Nationals Government will invest $5 million to build a key strategic cycleway linking Chatswood and St Leonards, making bike riding safer for the local community in Sydney’s north.
The cycleway would link to the existing cycleway network and traverse Artarmon along Hampden Road and Herbert Street. A separate extension of Frank Channon Walk from Nelson Street to Mowbray Road will open over the coming months, creating a seamless connection to the Chatswood CBD.
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the commitment was the latest example of the Liberals and Nationals’ $1.2 billion investment in walking and cycling infrastructure across NSW.
“The community have told us repeatedly that they want more separated cycleways in Sydney’s north to give them a safe, cheap and clean alternative to driving, while allowing them to enjoy a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Stokes said.
“This investment will not only appeal to the people already riding, but also attract people who don’t feel safe when riding on the road.
Member for Willoughby Tim James said the commitment would help transform the way people move around the North Shore.
“We’re committed to making walking and cycling safer and this investment will allow council to put shovels in the ground and build this critical link,” Mr James said.
“This will encourage people of all ages and abilities to ride to work, school, the shops or for recreation, making it easier to enjoy our fabulous local environment.”
“The route has been identified as a strategic corridor linking the local centres of Chatswood, Artarmon and St Leonards with public transport, the Artarmon industrial area and the Royal North Shore Hospital health precinct.”
David Thomson from Bike North said the investment from the Liberals and Nationals was strongly supported by the local community.
“Bike North applauds Minister Stokes and Member for Willoughby Tim James for their support for the critical St Leonards to Chatswood safe cycling route. This is one of the highest priority projects in all of northern Sydney,” Mr Thomson said.
Construction for stage one of the project will include:
· Separated bicycle and shared paths on Hampden Road and Herbert Street.
· New and upgraded traffic signals at major intersections with integrated bicycle infrastructure.
· New wayfinding and bicycle facilities to support safe and stress free riding.
· Improved landscaping to enhance the walking and riding experience.
