Grant funding of $1 million to improve the safety of women and children in the Northern Territory was released recently.
The Safe, Respected and Free from Violence Prevention Grants are designed to support local projects, programs, activities and actions that seek to challenge and change social and cultural attitudes that underpin domestic, family and sexual violence.
Grants of up to $150,000 are available to individuals and organisations to contribute towards the development and implementation of good practice, evidence-based domestic and family violence prevention and early intervention projects in the Northern Territory.
Rates of domestic, family and sexual violence in the Northern Territory are three times higher than any other Australian jurisdiction, with more than 60 reported incidents to Police every day.
Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said domestic, family and sexual violence crosses all ages, cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds and has a devastating impact on children and families.
“For Territory women, violence is the single largest driver for homelessness and is a major factor in children entering the child protection and youth justice systems. We need to focus on preventing violence,” he said.
“The release of the $1 million funding, per year for the next three years will help to increase awareness and educate the community to address the drivers of domestic, family and sexual violence.
“Everyone has the right to live a life free from violence and through the release of these grants we can work together and do our part to prevent domestic, family and sexual violence in the Northern Territory.”
Grants will be considered for programs and initiatives that demonstrate good practice approach and prevention, are community led and place women and children at the centre of the project.
