Safe Space expansion helping more Tasmanians

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Housing

The Tasmanian Government is continuing to tackle homelessness across Tasmania with the Safe Space program now operational as a 24/7 service in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart.

The expansion of the program is ensuring that Tasmanians who are sleeping rough can access both a safe overnight refuge, and the services they need to secure longer-term accommodation.

It forms part of our $4.3 million homelessness and support package that has allowed it to extend from an overnight service into a 24/7 full wrap-around support service, which is especially important under COVID-19 restrictions.

Importantly, the Safe Space expansion complements our other initiatives to reduce homelessness and housing stress right across the state.

This includes the expansion of the Homeshare program to give even more people the opportunity to build or own their own home, uncapped emergency accommodation and support services, and more rapid rehousing places for people escaping family violence.

We are also continuing to roll out our Affordable Housing Strategy and have committed to delivering an additional 1220 new social housing dwellings over the next three years, providing secure, long-term accommodation for Tasmanians in need of housing.

We will continue to do all we can to help our most vulnerable into safe and secure housing right across the state.
