Schools invited to apply for Independent Public School status

  • Expressions of interest for more Western Australian public schools to apply for the Independent Public School program in 2020 are now open
  • This will be the eighth intake of Independent Public Schools since 2009
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery is inviting more public schools to apply to become an Independent Public School in 2020.

Currently there are 575 Independent Public Schools in Western Australia.

Becoming an Independent Public School provides an opportunity to build on existing strong school and community partnerships. It is a foundation for schools and communities to achieve student success by having greater control of decision making at the school level.

A development program will be held over two days in early 2020, where the principal and school council chair will undergo training in preparation for the selection process.  The development program will focus on what we know makes a difference – building cultures of excellence.

Schools which are successful in their application will be announced in Term 2, 2020 and will become Independent Public Schools in Term 3, 2020.

Expressions of interest close on Wednesday October 30, 2019. For more information, visit https://www.education.wa.edu.au/independent-public-schools

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Independent Public Schools continue to provide students with excellent education and guidance, and principals have greater flexibility for the day-to-day running of their schools.

“I look forward to seeing this next group of Independent Public Schools in 2020 help serve their students and community.”
