A date with destiny: Queanbeyan woman’s quirky rule delivers $100,000 Instant Scratch-Its win

The Lott

A Queanbeyan woman who only buys lottery tickets when the date matches the year has watched her unusual strategy pay off with a $100,000 Instant Scratch-Its win.

The New South Wales resident’s top prize winning $5 Instant Scratch-Its ticket was purchased from My Gifts n Papershop, Shops 36-37, Riverside Plaza, 131 Monaro Street, Queanbeyan.

When we spoke with the instant winner, she was still coming to terms with her unexpected windfall.

“I’m still sort of saying to myself, ‘Don’t count your chickens before they hatch!'” she laughed.

“I have this thing where I only buy lottery tickets if the date is the same as the year, so on Monday, when it was the 26th, I went and got a ticket.

“At the last minute, I decided to grab a Crosswords Instant Scratch-Its ticket too.

“I scratched it right there in the store and I thought I had seven words, so I took it up to the counter.

“I was thinking, ‘Wow, $150 will be nice. That’s the most I’ve ever won!’.

“They had a look and they said, ‘No, you’ve got 10 words!’. I just started shaking. It was so unexpected.

“I’ve never won something like this in my life!”

With $100,000 heading her way, the winning woman was already dreaming of future plans.

“I’d love to go on an overseas trip but first I’ll put it somewhere I can’t squander it and have a good think,” she said.

“Thank you so much. I’m still in disbelief!”

My Gifts n Papershop owner Ken Patel was thrilled to sell a top prize-winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket.

“We are so excited and our customers will be too! It’s great news for us and the community,” he said.

“The last time we sold a major prize was in 2021 when we sold a division one winning entry in Saturday Lotto, so we’re thrilled to have another amazing win.

“Congratulations to the lucky winner! I hope you fulfill your dreams and good luck!”
