Search commences for Tasmania’s next Commissioner of Police

Tasmania will begin a national and international search for our next Commissioner of Police and Secretary of the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) this weekend.

This role is a vital leadership role for Tasmania, providing the highest quality policing and emergency management services for the people in our State.

I gratefully thank and acknowledge the outstanding service of Commissioner Darren Hine AO APM, who will embark on a well-deserved retirement in October this year.

Commissioner Hine has served the community for 42 years with Tasmania Police, having joined the service as a cadet in 1980, and for over 14 years has served as the Commissioner of Police and Secretary of the Department.

As the State Controller, Commissioner Hine has been responsible for leading the overall coordination of our emergency response, including most recently the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout his time as Commissioner, he has shown exemplary leadership and has made an extraordinary contribution to keeping Tasmanians safe.

Commissioner Hine is held in the highest regard in Tasmania and across Australia, and the Government recognises and sincerely thanks him for his decades of dedication and strategic leadership in delivering high quality police and emergency services for the Tasmanian community.
